Formal. Use this as an opportunity to dress to the nines, if you want! Italian weddings tend to be very formal and many of the guests will be dressed accordingly.
That said, dress up in whatever way makes you feel fab! Some have asked what our suggested colors are; we’re thinking “Summer”!

Trieste has an airport. There won’t be any direct flights to it from outside of Europe, but there are daily flights from Frankfurt and Rome, making for easy transfers.
The closest major international airports are Venice and Ljubljana. Getting to Trieste from either takes about two hours by train or bus.

The wedding is on Wednesday June 24th and we’ll have events throughout the week for guests who want to stay longer. (See our schedule here.)
Wedding aside, Trieste is a great city and has plenty to explore over the course of a week.

On our wedding map, we’ve broken our suggestions of where to stay into three “neighborhoods” – take a look!
No part of town is unsafe. The only real consideration is proximity to the action and hilliness. The areas we recommend are flat, but much of Trieste requires a lot of up and down walking to get around.

It’s Italy, so you’re probably thinking “pizza and pasta”… Wrong part of Italy!
Italian cuisine is a patchwork quilt of hundreds of regional cuisines, and Trieste is a particularly distinct part of that patchwork. The food is influenced by its time as the Austro-Hungarian Empire’s major port city, by Venetian seafood up the Adriatic, by its Slovenian and Croat neighbors, and by the farming traditions of Friuli to the north. In other words, its a mash up of many wonderful things.
There definitely is great pizza and pasta in town, but don’t stop there!
Our wedding map includes over a dozen recommendations for osterias, trattorias, cafés, bars, and, yes, pizzerias!

There’s tons to see in Trieste and in the surrounding area.
We’ve got a few suggestions on our wedding map of great sites and hidden gems!

You don’t need a car. If you do rent a car, we recommend getting as compact of a car as you can. Parking in Trieste can be extremely difficult.
Trieste has a great bus system, and Trieste’s train station is a short walk away from Piazza Unita (the center of town) with frequent trains to Venice, Pula, Ljubljana, and other nearby cities.

In May, we’ll have a whole guide with some useful Italian.
